Why Do We Smudge Ourselves First?

Innerstanding the Importance of Smudging Ourselves

As we know that smudging ourselves first is the second step of the smudging practice; right after setting the intention.

The smoke from smudging is similar to the water that we clean our bodies with, but instead, it cleanses our energetical bodies. Most importantly, it assists us in staying in our energy during the smudging process; creating a protective shield around us, so when the stuck energies in our spaces are moved, we stay in our energetical field.

Smudging Ritual for Self-Protection and Self Cleansing

When we smudge ourselves we begin by our head, going down to our feet; and then we try to do the same on our back!

First, cleanse our hands with the smoke as if we were washing our hands. We then draw the smoke over all of those different areas.

Each area that we smudge carries a different purpose:

  • Mind: to entertain good thoughts, to be anchored in the Present moment, and to enhance our connection with the Divine;
  • Eyes: to see the good in others and in every situation;
  • Ears: to listen and hear good sounds;
  • Mouth: to speak empowering words;
  • Throat: to always tell our truth in the most respectful and clear ways
  • Heart: to open our hearts to the Divine Source; and to remember to always be in this sacred space;
  • Back: to have others watch our back, and to remove any energetical hooks that no longer serve us;
  • Hair: to take care of our lifeline;
  • Whole being: to enhance the good part of ourselves through our actions, and to release with ease, joy, and glory whatever is holding us back from our highest potential;
  • Feet: to walk the talk and to create a great path; and of course to deepen our connection with Our Mother Earth
