Smudging Ritual: The Importance of Smudging Ourselves First
Smudging ourselves is the second primordial step in the Smudging Ritual!
Think of the smoke as "spiritual water." Just as you wouldn't handle a task with dirty hands, you should clear a space with a clean aura field.
Check the steps here: The Essentials: The 6 fundamental steps of the smudging practice.
Smudging ourselves first acts as follows:
-
Spiritual Hygiene:
Smudging smoke is like the water we use to wash our bodies. Instead of skin, it cleanses your energetic body. It is a powerful tool for daily spiritual hygiene. -
The Protective Shield:
Smudging yourself first creates an energetic "buffer." This anchors you in your own light. It prevents "energetic debris" from attaching to you as you clear stagnant energy in a room.
TL;DR: The Self-Smudge Shortcut
Why do we smudge ourselves before the room?
-
Safety: It builds a "filter" so you don't absorb the stagnant energy you are clearing.
-
Authority: It aligns your Mind, Heart, and Voice with the Divine, making your ritual more powerful.
-
Presence: It acts as a "reset button" to get you out of your head and into the Sacred Moment.
The Golden Rule: You cannot pour from an empty cup, and you cannot clear a space from a cluttered aura. Self first, Space second.

When we smudge ourselves, we begin with our head, going down to our feet, and then we try to do the same on our back!
First, we cleanse our hands with the smoke as if we were washing them. We then draw the smoke over all of those different areas.
Each area that we smudge carries a different purpose:
- Mind: Think good thoughts, stay present, and connect with the Divine.
- Eyes: See the good in others and in every situation.
- Ears: Listen and hear good sounds;
- Mouth: Speak empowering words;
- Throat: Speak our truth respectfully and clearly.
- Heart: Open to the Divine and stay in this sacred space.
- Back: Visualize any energetic hooks that no longer serve us, being dismantled
- Hair: Honor and care for your spiritual lifeline.
- Whole Being: Radiate your best self and release all limits with ease and joy.
- Feet: Walk the talk and to create a great path, and ground deep into Mother Earth.
