The Power of Altars: Their Aliveness
The Power of Altars resides in their Aliveness! You breathe Life into them.
An Altar is a Sacred Space. It is a Spiritual Focal Point and a reflection of your Divine Self.
Altars are vibrant, living representations of our spiritual journeys. They serve as sacred physical spaces. They anchor our manifestations, intentions, and spiritual path. They bridge our connection to the Divine and our own Divinity.
These are dynamic spaces. We create them as stepping stones in our journey. They are as versatile and unique as we are.
By interacting with our altar, we cultivate a deeper connection. We maintain and expand our link with our Inner Selves. We align with the Universe/Quantum Field/Source.
TL;DR: Your Altar, Your Living Connection
An altar isn't just a shelf! It’s a vibrant, living focal point that breathes with your intention. It’s a physical "station" where your inner self meets the Universe.
-
The Vibe: There are no strict rules! Your altar should reflect your heart, your unique journey, and your divinity.
-
The Location: Anywhere that feels right—a tiny shelf, a dedicated corner, or a small table.
-
The Essentials: Use a Sacred Cloth to define the space and represent the 4 Elements:
-
Air (East): A feather for intuition and breath.
-
Fire (South): A candle or smudge stick for passion and change.
-
Water (West): A shell or cup for emotions and love.
-
Earth (North): A stone for grounding and stability.
-
-
The Magic: Add personal treasures like crystals, flowers, or tea. Interact with it daily through meditation, journaling, or smudging to keep the energy flowing.
Bottom Line: Your altar is a reflection of you. Build it with love, give thanks, and let it evolve as you do.
Where to build your Altar
Build your altar anywhere that suits you. It can be a small shelf on the wall. It can be a small table in the corner. It could even be a whole corner of a room.
You can build one principal Altar. You can also place small ones in each room of your home.
What Goes Into An Altar?
Creating an altar is more than just placing objects on a surface. Each item carries its own significance and energy.
The objects on your altar represent the Elements, Spirits, Feelings, and Intentions. They can even represent specific Goddesses or Gods. Use them to connect with your spiritual practices.
Common items include:
-
Sacred Cloth: Defines the sacred space.
-
Elements: Earth (stone), Air (feather), Fire (candle or smudge), and Water (cup or shell).
-
Personal Items: Crystals, statues, symbols, or meaningful trinkets.
-
Other Offerings: Items from nature, like pine cones, flowers, or pebbles.
-
Nourishment: A steaming cup of tea, dried fruit, or chocolate.
In its most basic form, an altar can be a single stone. It can be a flickering candle that serves as a focal point.
If your practice is earth-based, include a nod to the four directions. A more elaborate altar can focus on different energies. For group rituals, each member can bring an object to represent a facet of the shared work.
Your Altar
The Power of Altars resides in your Heart!
Your altar is a deeply personal space. You are guided to create a space that vibrates with you.
It is like creating a "station" for the Angels, the Elements, and empowering Energies! It reflects your uniqueness and resonates with your visions. Your altar is the Living Space that you built for yourself, by yourself. It is where you meditate, practice, and create your Rituals. There are no strict rules.
Follow your intuition. Let your heart guide you in creating this empowering space. I am going to share 5 basic rules to help you start:
5 Basic Rules for Creating an Altar | Basic Ed.
1. Gather Supplies: Dedicate a piece of cloth that will define the space the altar will take up. Gather up an offering for each of the Elements!
2. Choose a Location: This should be in a convenient spot! Identify Which Direction is East: This is where the sun rises. You can also use a compass.
3. Place the Items on Your Altar: Please remember again, there are no rules in these practices. The Altar is built from the Heart, and the Heart knows the "Rules." But I will give you a simple example to follow: Take a deep breath, set your intention, and create.
-
Arrange Your Altar Cloth: Place it in the spot you have chosen.
-
Place the Feather on the Eastern Side:
Welcome the Spirits of the East: Air, Intellect, Gratitude for Breath, and Intuition. Your Feather represents the Air Element.
-
Place Your Candle or Smudging Stick on the Southern Edge:
Light it. Welcome the Spirits of the South: Fire and Transformation.
Your Candle or Smudging Stick represents the Fire Element.
-
Place Your Cup of Water or a Sea Shell on the Western Side:
Welcome the Spirits of the West: Water, Emotion, Flexibility, and Love.
Your cup of water or the seashell represents the Water Element.
-
Place Your Stone on the Northern Side:
Welcome the Spirits of the North: Earth, Nourishment, Stability, and Grounding. Your stone represents the Earth Element.
- Add Your Other Offerings: Crystals, Crystal Grids, Orgonite Pyramid, Flowers, Figurines, Tibetan Bowls, etc.
4. Do your ritual: Create the Space and Time to do your meditation, chanting, journaling, breathwork, and/or visualization.
5. Give Thanks: Take a few deep breaths. Smile in appreciation at the beauty you have created. Recognize the wholeness in your offerings.
Give thanks to the Spirits of each Direction you called. Invite them to leave if they must, or to stay if they love to stay
Some of My Personal Altars
I’ve created many altars, from the simplest to the more elaborate. Some had only a candle. Others included many elements.
I also create temporary altars for my photoshoots. Check out the pictures below!
"Remember that you are Water: Cry, Cleanse & Flow.
Remember that you are Fire: Burn, Tame & Ignite.
Remember that you are Air: Be still, Focus & Decide.
Remember that you are Earth: Ground, Build & Give.
Remember you are Spirit: Connect, Listen, Know, Be Still, and Remember." Unknown
